University of St Andrews Statement re SRU League Rugby

University of St Andrews Rugby Football Club has made the decision to focus purely on their Biritish Universities and College Sport (BUCS) commitments from next season onwards. This means that the club will no longer participate in Scottish Rugby Union RBS Saturday league rugby.

This decision has been made for the following reasons:

-with a change in our academic calendar at St Andrews, there are now 6 fixtures during the season schedule for Saturday fixtures when the club has no players at university
-the professionalism and focus of being successful at BUCS level is the club’s and university’s priority and all efforts must go towards providing the very best student experience to our athletes
-every season, our pool of players changes due to graduates, incoming first year students and injuries. Thus every year, our sustainability of playing a 2nd XV in Saturday rugby varies and this places strain on the club and its members as well as affecting our opposition.
-the club does not deem it fair to other clubs in our league who may be lucky/unlucky as to when they get drawn to play fixtures against our club as we can at time play a much stronger team than the league requires and consequently affect league positions and final promotion/relegation status of other clubs

The success of our 1st XV this season becoming Scottish BUCS champions with a strict policy of not playing two games per week has produced a positive outcome and experience for our players. We will be implementing our one game per week policy for the rest of our club members in lower teams and will now field three teams every Wednesday in BUCS competitions.

As a founding member of Scottish Rugby Union in 1873, the club is tremendously proud of its history and tradition in the game. However, suitable changes have to be made to the infrastructure of our program to provide the very best student experience for our athletes throughout their time at university and the club feels that this change is the best way to achieve that.
