Glasgow Warriors, last season’s Rabodirect Pro 12 runners up, continued their pre-season training in St Andrews last week on a three day camp which saw the squad use the excellent facilities at the university.
Many of the squad are familiar with the surroundings at the university due to the Scotland National team using the rugby facilities in the build up to 6 Nations and November tests over the past few years. This pre-season has added significance as The Warriors have been seeded 2nd in Europe for the upcoming Champions Cup, replacing the familiar Heineken Cup, so there was a lot of hard work to be done by both players and coaches.
Head Coach Gregor Townsend commented ‘Our camp at St Andrews was a real success at an important period of our pre-season training. We were looked after very well and had an excellent base at the halls of residence. I thought the facilities were first-class – the University pitch is surely one of the best playing surfaces in Scotland. It was a really productive and enjoyable week.’
Director of Rugby at the University David Ross added ‘It was great to further develop our relationship with the Warriors and Scottish Rugby. Having both Edinburgh and Scotland training here over previous seasons proves the excellence of the facilities and the high quality support we are able to offer to the best players in the country. The players and management were superb throughout their camp here and were eager to share their thoughts with our staff and help them develop their skills. Stuart Yule, the head of Strength and Conditioning, spent time with Allan Gartshore, the University’s Strength and Conditioning Manager, as well as the Saints Sport S+C interns. This invaluable CPD opportunity will further develop our rugby program, as well as the intern experience at the University. We wish the squad every success for the coming season.’
It was not all hard work and training for the squad who enjoyed sometime around the town and visited Luvians, owned by Warriors backrow forward Chris Fusaro’s family, for some well-earned ice cream.
